Track 16 gallery at Bergamot Station had various video installations going on simultaneously. One room featured Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelly's, Fresh Acconci, which is a contemporary/ remake of Vito Acconci's 1970's performance pieces. If one is fascinated with Acconci and has some background in video art and it's history, then viewing the recreated Acconci classics might make more sense. If one doesn't understand where Fresh Acconci may have originated, then hopefully they enjoy soft porn, because that's pretty much what you get.
Track 16 also had various short docs and videos playing in another installation room. One such film began with Whinny the Pooh pouring large containers of honey onto a white mat. At first I thought it was a reference to Pooh pouring out his soul by emptying the honey, his favorite thing in the world. But then the artist came out, undressed, and began rubbing her body all over the mat. The performance continued with the artist’s sexual and perverse portrayal and commentary on the childhood story. At times it was humorous, but at other times it was simply disgusting. The artist wrapped things up by asking the audience to pay her in $20 bills to lick her body. Various audience members participated by licking her wherever they pleased. Although I can respect this as someone’s art, I could not understand what would motivate one to subject themselves in such a way. As hard as it was to watch, I was even more fascinated by watching the artist’s strange behavior.
We are a group of Art students from the University of California Riverside who are attending a series of Art Galleries in several parts of Southern California. We have decided to use Blogger.com to post the pictures we take, and record our thoughts and opinions about the work we visit. You can find our critiques and thoughts on the work in the "comments" field, which appears below the pictures of the art.
