I was really impressed with Francesca DiMattio's work at LAXART. The large scale paintings constructed specifically for the space, was busy, chaotic, even overwhelming, but in a very constructed way. The eight panel painting was definitely painterly, but also architectural, while the colors, the patterns, and subjects chosen gave the work a graphic feel. The detail was really amazing. I was definitely inspired by what I saw. The artist explored various ways of using paint, that often times are not explored enough. Although I didn't understand what it was all about, it didn't matter, because the work really did stand on its own. On a personal level, this was the most interesting and engaging work I have seen thus far this quarter.

LAXART

The curator for this gallery seemed to have no respect for us as viewers or for the artists which she was displaying. Her gum chewing, bad mouthing of Francesca DiMattio's age and work was not only rude but exemplified all of the elements that are least desirable about the art world today. If she disliked the work so much, why then did she choose to show it? If she thought the artist was too young and the work not fit for the space, why then did she have it installed? Is it not the curator's job to try and display artist's work in the best possible light? Shouldn't she be complimenting the collection rather then telling us that it looked better in the artist's studio? It's sad to think that my artwork is at the merciless hands of heartless curators who are too busy buying black dresses, dark sunglasses (meant to be worn only indoors) chewing gum and hating life to appreciate the amazing artwork that is being displayed at their own galleries! I'm sure that if a "big time" art critic were to walk in to her gallery and rave about the work her tune would change in a heartbeat. She gave the impression of being an arrogant, pompous, ego maniacal jerk who only cares to think about art when someone "important" is watching.
