Lukas Roth’s photographs were definitely engaging. There was something that seemed disturbing in what they reflected while also being compositionally and aesthetically beautiful. The images are so realistic, but at the same time there is something very plastic about them. The colors pop out, which is what makes them so attractive, but it’s also deceiving. Is this a reflection on real life, or was Roth’s intent to make them seem unreal? From my experience, life is generally not that bright, or clean. As much as I like the photographs, I want to not like them because I think their fake and a bit contrived. I’ve always had a hard time trying to connect art to photography and photography to art. Sometimes they relate, sometimes they don’t, and that leaves me confused.
