Brendan Monroe's work at the Richard Heller Gallery was way out there. Many of his images were of cell-like forms that really took on a life of their own. The colors used and the way the images were constructed are beautiful, while at the same time kind of gross. Most of the paintings were done in acrylic, while some incorperated collage. Some of his larger paintings seemed to represent the stomache (or some internal organ) housing human-like monster forms. One painting shows a human being taken under by the germ-like monsters. Monroe's work seems to reflect on how the cells within our organs can take away life, just as much as they give life; perhaps the idea that we have no control. The gallery also featured a large womb structure with a red opening that you could enter. The interior is covered with pillows that light up and make sounds as if actually in a womb. It was a pretty crazy but also theraputic experience. Not only was the work exhibited totally bizarre, but it was beautifully rendered and well put together.
