Jeffery Vallance’s work Belief System, at Margo Leavin Gallery was not your typical display of art. The 1970’s political work seemed to be a collection of the artist’s memories that he was then able to utilize as a series today. I thought it was really great that as a kid in school he asked various U.S. Senators to send him back a piece of art. What was even more interesting were the responses he got back. Some of the senators had a secretary make a drawing, while others made quick sketches of the capital building or the American flag. There were others that shared an interest in art and sent an image from an artist they liked. When seeing all of the responses together, it really seemed like the artist as a kid, knew exactly what he was doing, almost as if he was mocking them. I liked that the artist also included his own paintings of senators from when he was young. It’s almost like he was obsessed, and it makes you wonder where this fascination came from. I thought it was a really creative thing to put together without having to try too hard.
We are a group of Art students from the University of California Riverside who are attending a series of Art Galleries in several parts of Southern California. We have decided to use Blogger.com to post the pictures we take, and record our thoughts and opinions about the work we visit. You can find our critiques and thoughts on the work in the "comments" field, which appears below the pictures of the art.
