Upon entering the room that housed the paintings by Maria Roberts the viewer was made keenly aware of the fact that they themselves are made of organic matter. This may seem like a fact difficult to forget but the paintings created by the artist leave the impression of cold hard steel. They are unwelcoming to the weakness of organic matter that we puny humans consist of. The geometric shapes left no room for error and the drab colors seemed to have been chosen for their lack of life and imagination. I picture this work hanging in the office of a heartless corporate CEO who must remind himself on a daily basis that he has chosen to forget how to be human. He has chosen predictability over spontaneity and coldness over warmth. I found this body of work to be boring, uninteresting and lacking in the human touch.
We are a group of Art students from the University of California Riverside who are attending a series of Art Galleries in several parts of Southern California. We have decided to use Blogger.com to post the pictures we take, and record our thoughts and opinions about the work we visit. You can find our critiques and thoughts on the work in the "comments" field, which appears below the pictures of the art.
